Doña María Diega (Madrid
1852 – Bordeaux
1916) was one of the richest women of Spain in latest XIX and earliest XX
centuries. Possessing an immense fortune and huge properties
in France, with
vineyards in Landes and Bordeaux, and also in Spain, Murcia, Madrid and Guadalajara.
She had bonds with Navarra and more precisely with Dicastillo
due to important familiar relations and possessions connected to the eldest
Navarrese nobility.
In order to complement her vineyards in Bordeaux, Doña María
Diega decided to construct a residence in which to
retire of her daily obligations
and equally to make good use of the vineyards she had in Navarra.
Built
over a stonework wall, the Palace also has extensive grounds surrounded
by a wall, having 60.000 m² of gardens and wooded parks.
The Palacio de la Vega is a building of neogothic
style of doubtless quality and great significance, developed as a U and
finished off by two towers in each end of the structure. One of the towers
has a square shape as well as the second one is octagonal, where the references
of medieval-Renaissance origin and clear English revivals influences predominate.
Constructed on top of a hill from which the valley can be perfectly observed,
with magnificent views and a good orientation, the palace has a stonework
platform and is surrounded by a wall that encircles all the property.
